Parks

Elsey National Park, known for its thermal springs and camping opportunities, is a vast park that offers various activities such as canoeing and bushwalking. The park is accessible by three different roads, each leading to different attractions within the park. Visitors can enjoy swimming, camping, boating, fishing, and exploring historical sites in the area. With no direct public transport to the park, it's best to rent a car from Darwin or Katherine for easy access.

Bitter Springs & Mataranka springs are a definite do, can't drive buy. Bring your noodles & enjoy a relaxing float down Bitter Springs or just sit & enjoy your time at Mataranka. Constant 34 degrees but definitely doesn't feel like it.

Joyce B — Google review

Beautiful walk alongside the river. The Falls although small are worth the walk

Noname H — Google review

Loved this. Much nicer campsites than the nearby caravan parks if you prefer space and bush. Not as close to thermal springs but right on the river for interesting walks.

Nigel S — Google review

Top place. Good caravan park at bitter springs and beautiful area. The natural spring is top notch

Alfred D — Google review

Camped at the other campground the 1st night which was great then Mataranka homestead the next few nights. Loved the thermal pool although does get quite busy and noisy and a just a short drive to Bitter springs . This was a nice relaxing drift along the crystal clear creek. A noodle is a must to get the most out it.

Doddy G — Google review

What an amazing place in the Northern Territory. We spent the first part of the morning swimming at Bitter Springs which I highly recommend. It is like something you see on TV! You don’t need to travel out of Australia to enjoy something so magical and beautiful. Water is clear. There’s a nice currant which can take you downstream if you wish to float and relax. Ample parking. Not too far to walk to the springs. Toilets are near car park.

Liisa B — Google review

The area around the thermal pools is very pretty but tbh compared to other national parks in Australian there isn't all that much to this one compared to others. Nature is beautiful wherever it is but I would necessarily go out of my way to come here. As its on a major roadtrip route though it is worth a stopover.

Daniel M — Google review

Very picturesque park with good camping facilities and generous shaded sites. Plenty of interesting walks although due to increased croc alerts no swimming was permitted on my visit there. Easy access on sealed road and not too crowded (possibly due to croc alert). Feral donkeys were noisy at night

John P — Google review

Great place for a day or two. The campsite 12 km out Jalmurark (AKA 12 mile yard) has hot showers and gas BBQ. $10/person camping fee.It even has its own spring feed water hole ( crocodile free) swimming hole 100 meters from the camp site.

Chris K — Google review

Gorgeous thermal springs... incredible water so clear. The pools actually snake down 150m or so, so there's loads of space even if it gets busy. Easy entry/exit steps. Bring a noodle or tube so you can relax while the (mild) current takes you down to the end.

Jacqui — Google review

Sort of like stepping in time machine and going to prehistoric kingdom only difference is no dinos. Unique experience would definitely recommend. Be aware though there may be 1000s of bats

Val ( — Google review

Worth the visit. Book the campsite online. The small walks ( Botanic loop, Aboriginal campsite, river sites) are worth the time. I liked Bitter Springs and the We Of Never Never film set. Mataranka museum was good and films "We of the Never Never" every day.

Spring

Bitter Springs, located within Elsey National Park, is a natural thermal pool offering a serene and picturesque swimming experience. The pool features clear warm water flowing through a canopy of trees and lilies, creating a tranquil environment for visitors to enjoy. Despite its name, the water is safe for swimming and free from crocodiles. Unlike the more crowded Mataranka Thermal Pools nearby, Bitter Springs provides a quieter and calmer atmosphere for relaxation.

This is an absolutely stunning place to relax for a few hours ! The water is crystal clear and comfortable, the park is well maintained and clean. Be sure to bring your snorkels and pool noodles !!

Marjorie — Google review

Got there first thing in the morning at 7am. Water was nice and warm and clear. Only two other families there. Pretty cool to drift along with the flow and get out down stream and come back to start and do it all again. Suggest taking pool noodles to relax. 😎

Fully79 — Google review

Take a flotation noodle and float downstream . Amazing.

David B — Google review

Magical place was hard to believe it was real! Many people bought pool noodles from the petrol station to float down but the current is weak and honestly lying on your back or front is just as nice and reduces the unnecessary plastic waste.Highly recommend stopping by. So relaxing!

Alice K — Google review

Absolutely beautiful, warm water, good access steps in and out. A bit of a walk from the carpark and no facilities to get dressed in. Otherwise it’s a must have visit

Nathan B — Google review

Off season - checked it out when passing through. It’s open but wouldn’t go swimming. Water stagnant and lots of algae.

Audrey S — Google review

We went End June and it was perfect, what a magical place. Must must go if you're near by. We drove from Darwin for the day just to go...

Carolynne H — Google review

We stayed in the caravan park. Excellent admenities and walking distance to hot springs. Overall a good experience. Certainly would stay again.

Craig M — Google review

Great spot. Got recommend to us and did not disappoint. Will call in here again on our way back in 2 weeks time...

Graham R — Google review

Bitter Springs is a thermal pool. The location is still pretty much in its natural state with the exclusion of a concrete path suitable for wheel chair access. Steps have also been added to aid getting in and out of the pool in three places. The ‘pool’ is actually a flowing stream that will take you through an amazing canopy of trees as you float past lilies in flower in pristine clear warm water. The water is safe from crocodiles. With the aid of goggles you can see the bottom of the pool and the wonderful plants growing down there. I floated and gently swam, but many used a pool noodle to travel the length of the pool, which is approximately 100m in length.Parking is available for cars, caravan and busses.Stunning location and a must visit if you are ever in the area.

Great A — Google review

One of my favourite places to swim in Australia. Stay at the nearby caravan park and walk the couple of hundred metres around dawn for a very peaceful time.

Paul M — Google review

Straight out of the garden of EdenBest hot spring we've been to, grab a noodle and float down the crystal clear creek, an absolute paradise.

Wewentthataway A — Google review

Jungle shrouded natural springs. Great to just float with the current. To be honest, I thought Katherine springs were much better. Very crowded when we went and a lot of scummy algal growth all around the shore.

Jamie H — Google review

Bitter springs got its name from the taste of the water (don't drink the water...not advisable)...LOVELY! We went during the dry season, water was just perfect for a dip! This pool seems to be quite a bit more quiet and calm than the Mataranka Thermal Pools; it was less crowded. Lots of people brought their pool noodles and placed their thongs(sandals) on the end of their pool noodle as when you flow down to the bottom of the pool and need to get out and walk to the start as the current takes you to a place you can't swim further. No worries though, you can swim up current or float at the end of the pool.

Tabitha P — Google review

Nice warm springs. Water is running so you can float down, get out and walk back up and float down again. Great photo opportunities.

Aussirose T — Google review

Definitely worth stopping in for a swim.Just check to make sure no crocs have been seen in the area.

Mataranka Thermal Pool and Rainbow Springs is a serene oasis nestled in a lush palm forest within a national park. The area offers year-round swimming in the soothing hot springs, providing a stark contrast to the rugged Gulf Savannah country that surrounds it. Accessible via well-maintained pathways and concrete stairs, the pool's sandy bottom is surrounded by picturesque palms. Fed by Rainbow Springs at an impressive rate of 30.

This is an absolute must visit if you are in the area. If you are doing both Mataranka and Bitter springs on the same day come here second as there are shower facilities in the toilet block. You can stay on the property with Caravan facilities and on-site rooms also available. There is a gift store a bar and a small cafe. You will also find the replica homestead from the movie We of the never never.

David A — Google review

We didn't visit the Rainbow pool, though spent our time at the main pool which was lovely.Mostly shaded it was a great place to relax when on a warm day, and would be better on a cold morning in the thermal pool.As someone with mobility issues I found the stairs at the far end of the pool much easier for getting in/out than the others which were steep. We also had a great lunch at the cafe, and has to resist the puppy dog eyes from "Fred" who we can assume loves to clean up and spilled food. Not sure if he was visiting for the day, but had the feeling he's a resident.I did prefer the pools nearby at Bitter Springs as you could float down the river and the view was more varied, though these are a close second and better for just sitting/floating around and chatting as the current was much gentler.

Matt B — Google review

This place is just magic! It's so relaxing and the scenery just makes you forget about all your worries. There is a walk way that takes you straight to the pools with stairs that lead down. One side of the pools is more shallow than the other. We saw lots of small turtles which was amazing and some wallabies. Mataranka homestead is the place to stay if you want to walk down here at anytime. This place is open 24 hours although I would take a torch if you want to swim at night.

Anicka — Google review

Short walk to a beautiful pool! There’s a cafe right there! Not a big place for a swim but a great place for a dip.

Dani — Google review

Things to take:1. Goggles2. WaterThe water is super clear if you take goggles you can see clearly and all the way across the small swimming area. The water is also very warm so no need to worry about getting that shock with cold water.(Posted on 05/26/2024)

Matthew A — Google review

Love, love this place , we come here for a week every time we travel up through the centre. Besides the great thermal pool, there is a stage with nightly entertainment, a basic shop, a bar, a communal firepit, a restaurant, a lot of history, powered and unpowered sites in bushland and lots of peaco*cks. Animals are allowed in a certain area, not near the thermal pool.Bring a noodle to float in the water as a little deep. There are steps, for a easy access to water. If you like my ratings, please follow me.

Karen D — Google review

This is initially Mataranka Thermal Pools and Berry Springs... Both were amazing. Berry springs crystal clear water and under current that pulls you gently down to a ladder at the end. Fantastic, Magical... Cant wait to return...

Wonita C — Google review

Only had a shortish stop to visit the impressive thermal pool. Easy access and popular. Extremely clear water. Nice setting.

Werner T — Google review

Good view, good place for relax. The water is very clear. It's easy to get there.

Eveline B — Google review

Beautiful springs however I wouldn’t suggest going on a weekend or definitely not school holidays because it gets so packed. It’s right next to a caravan park so it’s always busy. I didn’t bother swimming as it was so crowded. I prefer Bitter springs. This spring is more man made having the sides with proper stone walls.Rainbow springs was cute though seeing the water flow.

Laura K — Google review

So beautiful! If you have to time to visit both Bitter Springs and Mataranka do so. The water is beautiful and astonishingly clear.Would say of the two Bitter Springs is better, for pure natural beauty and swim quality. But both are spectacular!

Alice K — Google review

The pool is absolutely amazing. Such clear water and a nice warm temperature (but not too warm!). The tropical surroundings are beautiful and the whole setting is peaceful and restful. 100% recommend and would visit again!

Lauren M — Google review

6.30 am Sunday morning. Such a beautiful spot to relax, reboot and refresh. Welcoming the first sign of the dry season. With a beautiful fellow human.

Tania P — Google review

Called in on the way from Daly Waters Pub to Darwin. Hot day (35° at 9am) so it was great first a quick dip before continuing on. Beautiful area & peaco*cks.Just watch where you walk, the millions of bats create their own sort of 'rainfall'

Sarah P — Google review

Fantastic place to relax. Thermal pool area is built well. Bar and entertainment area awesome and great food

Dan B — Google review

The Mataranka Thermal Pool is a must visit place on the way when youre around Mataranka. It's a fantastic place to swim. The water is crystal clear and the temperature is around 32 degrees all year. Its varying depths make it good for people of all ages, bring some noodles or something for the children. It was personally my favourite place to swim whilst in the Northern Territory.

Alex L — Google review

Great place ! It's a bit of a walk from the car park to the actual pools but so worth it

CarolynA ( — Google review

Great spot to chill or swim in the warm thermal pool, It's kinda refreshing , also the walking trail on the site.

Matthana M — Google review

Very nice water temperature. Lovely to visit and see the blue water and huge palms surrounding. The little fish were so cute too. Really quite enjoyed. Wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to drive here from Darwin but if you're passing through already, it's a must see!

Daniel M — Google review

We came when it was noon, and it was empty. The sun reflection makes the pool look absolutely stunning! The scenery to the pool is also dreamy!I would love to go here again!

Swan — Google review

34 degrees, pool surrounded by palm trees. Amazing stars through the top of the canopy... a great place to soak and watch the stars.

Duncan G — Google review

Another great spring in the Mataranka area.Crystal clear warm water.

Roger G — Google review

Was lovely a beautiful spot, not as natural as Bitter Springs and you just floated around the one area which was okay.

Donna K — Google review

A beautiful gem off the Stuart Highway. Pro tip: come here for an early morning swim right when the gates open. It can get pretty busy during the heart of the day but when you have it all to yourself it really is magical.Very accessible path in that's also wheelchair accessible. If you're bringing small kids I recommend packing a double noodle to help them stay afloat.

The Never Never Museum, situated in the heart of Mataranka, offers a glimpse into the history of the local First Nation people, the North Australia Railway, and the Overland Telegraph. It also showcases its role in Australia's defense during World War II. The museum is open on weekdays and holds keys at the Rural Transaction Centre.

I was going here when The Naver Naver festival was took place 2 years ago. There whippy gigs, playground, local food & groceries and handmade crafts. When i came here it's crowded and full of people. Amazing that such a small town had a great tradition.

Ok and great for the history, but becoming run down and neglected. Displays and buildings are either gone or are starting to collapse.

Loved it loved it loved it. Lots to read... then go dip in Mataranka thermal pool. Its a great little side trip off the highway. All the trimmings... food loos n a bar. Animals cant stay BUT you can park em in the shade in the carpark for a quick tour of this n check em on way for a dip.

RV park

Bitter Springs Cabins and Camping is a serene retreat just 3 kilometers from Mataranka township, offering informal camping in a natural bush setting near the stunning Bitter Springs. The spacious campground provides powered sites with bore water on tap, allowing visitors to choose their own spot and stay unhitched if desired. The area is teeming with wildlife including birds, kangaroos, wallabies, freshwater crocodiles, and fish.

A great spot for an overnight or even stay a few days if you have the time.Booking was very easy and check in was quick and smooth. We stayed in a cabin - it was comfortable and had a kitchenette for us to make a little breakfast before we hit the road. The bathroom was clean, showers have good pressure and flowing hot water. The location is very close to bitter springs - the most beautiful natural thermal pool in the area. All you need when you’re passing through this great spot.

Rahul D — Google review

A very well set up park. Lots of trees for shade & privacy. Lots of flat, level sites. Very clean amenities & plentiful washing machines 2 x $2 coins. Walking distance to bitter springs. Pets allowed 👌🏼. A great place to relax for a few days!

Eliza B — Google review

Absolutely amazing place! From the lovely lady who checked me in, to the gorgeous Matthew who showed me to my site the place had me at hello! The site I was given was powered and shady and perfect! The showers and toilets are fantastic and huge! They are a combined toilet shower cubicle and so spacious! The shower heads are also clean so all Jets point at you!The Springs were so incredibly relaxing! So close, a short walk but having a pool noodle is a must! Thank you for an enjoyable stay I'll definitely come back! 😊

Bouncer M — Google review

A lovely selection of powered and unpowered sites, the ones around the perimeter offer a bit more privacy than ones in the middle. Showers, loos are all adequate. Very sheltered sites amongst trees and palms with some between sites. Mosquitoes weren't to bad so could sit out in balmy evening after heat of the day.And 500m walk to Bitter Springs for a warm swim.

Ian H — Google review

Great park. It’s quite big when you walk around but you don’t get that feeling at your own site as they have set the park up smartly with enough trees to make you feel like you have small sections to yourself. Staff at reception very friendly and it’s a well organised property. The Bitter Springs rival the Mataranka springs area. The bonus for us was the park sits along a little river where you can take the dogs for a swim. We didn’t see any snapping handbags.

Russell A — Google review

Absolutely beautiful park. Great amenities, very clean. Short walk to the Springs which are fabulous to float about in. Each camp space is surrounded by trees so privacy is great. Pet friendly.

Helen P — Google review

Except that on Thursday the 4th July we got a 6.15am wake up call by theBig Green Bus starting the engine.A fantastic looking rig of a renovated old bus & trailer (carrying a car).A very unwelcomed loud start to the day 😠The campgrounds are a fantastic, rustic & relaxing environment. Close to the warm natural springs. The amenities are rustic& well stocked. Are cleaned to a high standard. A warm welcome from the staff.

JANET E — Google review

Spent an amazing couple of nights at Bitter Springs. We arrived at 11am and still managed to secure a site. The unpowered sites are definitely the best and cost us $40 per night. Greg who takes you to your site was awesome and found us a spot right next to the river. A number of the other sites were quite shady which was not great for people who needed solar power but would be awesome when the weather starts to warm up. The amenities were clean and spacious and all the staff were so friendly. Bitter springs was only a leisurely 5-10 min walk from the campgrounds.

A J — Google review

First in best dressed. We stayed in an unpowered site. Plentiful shade. 500 Mt walk to hot spring.

Steve M — Google review

Great park easy walking distance to bitter Springs thermal pools.Crystal clear warm natural spring fed pool with a 150mtr stretch you can drift along with the slow current.Take a pool noodle !!! It's so peaceful.Park Amenities are clean tidy and modern.Plenty of space for vans tents and campers.Although Get to the park early to ensure a site as it fills pretty quick after 12.00 .Better than Mataranka springs imo.

Rob M — Google review

Bitter Springs Caravan park is great re location. You can park your van and either drive, walk or cycle up to the springs very easily. We picked a great site that had terrible Starlink service so that really impacted our trip but the whole grounds themselves are stunning. There's a river that runs through the grounds which is so cool and the park really is huge. Only thing missing for me is an oven in the camp kitchen but honestly, it has everything you need for a great stay.A beautiful mix between palm trees and bush!!

Team T — Google review

Nice unpowered sites amongst the trees and walking distance to Bitter Springs.Check-in was very dysfunctional - had to wait around for them to confirm site availability as it appears they don't have an allocation system, even though all the sites have numbers? Eventually, a guy rocked up in a quad to advise of availability.Unfortunately, the hot water system in the showers are crap. First night, I got maybe 1 minute of hot water, second night, 2 minutes. Also, other than a pizza van, there is nothing available. However, there is another caravan park on the same road closer to town that has a proper kitchen and bar.

Luke O — Google review

The lady at the reception was very nice, the place is beautiful. We had only one night but the sky full of stars were just stunning. Bitter spring pool is only 500 meters. Mataranka thermal pool is by car also very close. It’s a very good place to stay.

Erhard S — Google review

Tent camping in unpowered beautiful shady spot toilets blocks are clean, well maintained and water pressure in shower better than my own , camp kitchen is sufficient and swapped a book in the exchange at reception which is friendly , stayed 4 days and will be back .

Alexia G — Google review

Great quiet place to stay out of town and within walking distance to Bitter Springs. Big van sites, no bookings just turn up!Facilities were great with a big camp kitchen and clean amenities.

Jennifer T — Google review

Friendly and helpful managers. Perfect to stay overnight or a few days to take advantage of the Bitter Springs hot pools. It is a bit of a walk to reach the pools around 600 meters we found the pools there were Devine. Bring your pool noodles as the water is deep and the is a mild current that you float down from one end to the other this takes around 12 minutes then you get out and walk back and do it again.

CarolynA ( — Google review

Had a nice big and shady site that felt very private in a busy caravan park (unpowered #10). An easy walk to the springs which are so worth a visit (preferred this to Mataranka pools). More natural feeling and fun to drift in the current. On-site caravan repair person could be useful too! Plus car wash spot for gold coin donation. Very useful after returning from East Arnhem Land!

Nigel S — Google review

Great park in bush setting. Paul takes you to your site, well set out & run efficiently. We had huge powered site. Amenities shower/toilet combo, rustic vibe, very clean with hand wash & paper towel. A great relaxed atmosphere here, thermal springs only short distance. They ran a film night when we were there too. Highly recommend, would have stayed longer if could.

Beno M — Google review

We stayed here for 3 nights . Nice place staff were exceptional & friendly . Ammenities were great. The springs were nice but a little crowded at times but very relaxing. Would definitely recommend a visit here .

Sandra M — Google review

Yes it's close to the springs but now that you need a parks pass I'm not sure that's an advantage. The caravan park up the road was cheaper. Our site was very dusty. Ablution block was ok. Showered with three frogs or maybe two toads and a frog . Plenty of space between us and neighbours.

Ian S — Google review

Arrived just after 9am and lucky to get a powered site. Lady on reception so welcoming and professional. Amenities spotless. Location is fantastic and only 5 minute walk to beautiful natural heated springs. Float down with a pool noodle to enjoy nature’s serenity

Trish M — Google review

Great spot walking distance to Bitter Springs, huge park so lots of spots to choose from for power and non power. Great amenities, clean and with toilet and shower in together so more room.

Donna K — Google review

Quiet off the highway, lots of shady trees, spacious sites, walking distance to the springs, showers are limited hot water so good chance of having a cold shower and because the toilets are in the shower cubicles you can be waiting a long time to use a toilet. VERY popular and busy, watched 14 caravans line up for checkin at 9:45am! They don’t take bookings for unpowered sites, it’s first come first serve. No wifi, very limited phone reception.

T E — Google review

Absolutely lovely staff, easy check in, great directions to the springs. Great clean camping facilities. Highly recommend

Corey B — Google review

Friendly efficient welcome. Very shady unpowered sites. Very clean amenities with all we needed, including camp kitchen with fridge, hot plates etc. They even had a water truck to damp the tracks and cool it all down on a very hot afternoon! How’s that for service? LOVED the fire fly show in the bushes around our campsite on dusk! Magical!

Jill H — Google review

Tucked away amongst the trees. Good facilities and close to the hot springs. Family orientated and accommodating staff.

Android L — Google review

Stayed here twice and both times not long enough. Even though crowded theyanage sites to have physiological barriers in-between..the staff were sincere people people..Genuine, facilities bush camp style large and clean. Great location. Located just 500 meters from the heart of Mataranka township, Territory Manor Motel & Caravan Park offers a variety of accommodation options including powered sites, family rooms, and double share motel rooms. The property features a swimming pool, spa, camp kitchen, barbecue facilities, and a laundry. Guests can enjoy the peaceful ambiance under shady trees with peaco*cks roaming around. Live music is available on weekends while Bitter Springs Thermal Pool is just a 5-minute drive away.

Great park, friendly people. Has a quiet, bush feel about it. Didn't need to unhook the van for our stay... and didn't have close neighbours. The amenities were clean and the showers were hot and strong! Close to the thermal pools. Recommend it!

We stayed here for one night as we were travelling to Queensland. Check in was smooth, ample parking place, communal kitchen , pool had some dead frogs which is understandable in wet season. It’s a nice place to stay honestly. Loved the peaco*cks roaming around :)

Sanjana S — Google review

This motel has a lot of potential to be great and stands out in some respects from your stock standard NT caravan park/motel. Firstly, the motel has been recently renovated and the raw earth build makes it pretty cool during the day time. We visited in the dry and didn't really need the air con until the mid to late afternoon. There are solar panels which is a nice touch. However, the accommodation really needs some fly screens on the door and windows and a ceiling fan so you can get air flow. The place is crawling with bugs. Yes, you're in the bush so it's to be expected but my qualm is that the room itself is not properly sealed so there are multiple entry points for critters through the windows and crevices of the sink that have been partially renovated but left in a strange state of ill-repair. We stayed for two nights and there was no change service in between the first and second. Again, this would not be a drama for a bush accommodation except that the place is not kitted out for you to stay comfortably for a couple of nights. It would be great to have ample tea bags, coffee, a water jug, soap, towels and other bits to make the stay more comfortable. We ran out of coffee and hot chocolate on the first day, for instance. All up, a pleasant enough stay with a comfy bed but if they could go the extra mile this place could be great. I'd definitely stay here again over the caravan park next to thermal pools. This place is more family friendly, smaller and had a nice restaurant.

Leslie P — Google review

Camped in our caravan for one night on our way north. Pool and amenities block were clean. Food at restaurant was very nice and value for money. I felt sorry for the husband/wife team (I am assuming), they were SOOO busy with the wife taking food orders AND drink orders and the husband cooking and serving??? So consequently service was very slow. Long weekend you would have thought they would be adequately staffed??

Carolyn C — Google review

Fantastic caravan park. An absolute jewel. Staff friendly and helpful - especially Mater.I mean with $5 schooners and $10 co*cktails you can’t go wrong.Great van sites lots of grass, easy access and very clean facilities.Do yourself a BIG favour and stay here.

Gary A — Google review

A great spot away from the highway under shady trees. Peaco*cks roaming about everywhere. Live music each weekend night, but a rodeo as well unfortunately as the noise went on till around 1am.A 5min drive to Bitter Springs Thermal pool. This was gorgeous! It's a horseshoe shape and we floated with the current for 45mins, then got out and did it again. Beautiful purple water lilies growing along the edges. Warm, but not too warm.

Carol C — Google review

This place is getting every year more and more attractive. Rooms are super clean and getting very comfy with a lot a design taste ( nice bedding , raw earth walls , nice furnitures ), it's super quiet ! and the restaurant is a must eat around, one of the best remote restaurant in the territory. The outdoors are very nice, shady with massives trees and camping site is nicely set in betweenDuring the dry season you've got the one of the most beautiful springs in the NT which is in a walking distanceA must stay on the road

Maxime P — Google review

The caravan sites were nice and fairly large. The abloution blocks were basic but clean. The restaurant food is excellent and the atmosphere is fantastic. Staff are friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay here again and would recommend this van park.

Hazel S — Google review

I’m sure as a motel this place is great. However we stayed in a powered campsite and the place was practically empty. Reception wasn’t open and had to call to get information. Didn’t see one staff member the whole stay. Sent a text asking for WiFi password and got no response. Toilet facilities for the campground are big metal trailers with no air flow, if it was 35 degrees outside you can imagine how hot it got inside those things! They were absolutely crawling with spiders and mosquitoes inside. Restaurant and bar were closed for a private function. I don’t feel I got value for money with this campground, however as a motel with air conditioned rooms and en-suite I’m sure it would’ve been a different story.

Scott C — Google review

Close to the town. Could do with a rethink at the bar and restaurants. Over an hour for a basic meal. The que was long to get drinks with one slightly grumpy woman serving. Especially when you order anything that is not on tap or in a can. The younger male seemed he was trying to improve the place and attempted to get things moving. Could be great but now it is lacking. The live music was a great plus and made the stay with it.

Cap59 — Google review

Fabulous place to stay. Their "rammed earth" motel style rooms are very comfortable and well appointed, as well as being quite cool. The restaurant and bar is great, and they have some really great live music during the season, which we really enjoyed. Conveniently located just off the highway and just a few minutes drive down to Bitter Springs.

The perfect way to break up our drive from Darwin to Alice springs. This place does three stars really well. Comfy bed. Clean cool rooms. Smart tv. Easy food and drinks at the bar. And the birds! It’s a great place to stay!

Kerry V — Google review

Went there with couple of little bit darker skin brothers and they refused beers for some nonsense reasons after not even one jug each. Seemed really racist ever since after when we went there with white people and some of us were able to order jugs without even ordering food.

Sander V — Google review

After a long drive all we wanted was a meal and quiet evening. Nope. Loud entertainment. Couldn't think , so loud. Can't talk can't relax. Food was ordinary and took nearly an hour. Never again

Wendy S — Google review

Wonderful place to stay. They say it's the home of the barramundi feeding. They should change it to the home of the roosting peaco*cks. Every evening the peaco*cks gather on the lawns in front of the bar and you can watch them all go into one tree to roost for the night. Should make it the home of peaco*ck feeding. Comfy rooms. Good bar and restaurant. Well priced.

Adam T — Google review

If you dont buy atleast 13 dollar meal you cant get any beer/wine according to their rule.Horrible customer service,it felt as traveller that they do not welcome people from outside of Australia.I wouldn't recommend going there.Rooms are dirty client service even worse.

Damian B — Google review

The rooms are comfortable and clean and well appointed. The standout feature is the restaurant. Definitely a pleasant surprise. Fresh, well cooked and tasty. Licensed bar, prompt service and nice surroundings. Why wouldn't ya?

David M — Google review

A lovely, relaxing campgrounds that TAKE BOOKINGS unlike a few others nearby. Don't like travelling for hours and hoping to get a site!Lots of clean showers, plenty of room, beautiful pool and surrounding gardens with peaco*cks strutting around. The restaurant menu changes daily plus 3 hours of entertainment. Top stop.

Gail L — Google review

Stayed here for one night in a motel room for $117. Reception allowed us to check in an hour early. Room was large, aircon was on and it was clean. Very poor water pressure in shower. Grounds are overall nice, the place has huge potential just needs some TLC. We had pizza in the onsite restaurant open from 5.30 to 7pm which had a nice vibe. There were only two customers so probably not worth their while having it open in the off season, but we appreciated it. Pizza was $30 - it was ok.

Audrey S — Google review

Food was average but what was really frustrating was the lack of gluten free options absolutely none my father is a coeliac and there was nothing for him eat with would have been apart from there being no where else to eat. When we questioned the lady at the bar about it she point to a sigh that said "we have the right to not answer questions" they were also claiming to have fresh barramundi, but was a lie as it came out crumbed obviously it had been frozen then served with frozen peas and carrot.

Public bath

Mataranka Hot Springs is a hidden gem located in the small township of Mataranka, offering a refreshing oasis for travelers making the long journey from Alice Springs to Darwin. Surrounded by palm trees and sandy-bottomed thermal springs, this natural wonder features stunning turquoise lagoons that provide a surreal and calming experience. The warm and inviting waters are perfect for swimming, with a gentle current that allows visitors to float downstream.

What a great place. Just a note that parking is a limited fir caravans and Motorhomes. We had a couch with car trailer and was able to turn around and park in one couch parking. Worth trying getting in a little earlier.

Andrew L — Google review

Water is crystal clear and perfect temperature, can be a little busy especially on weekends

Ash — Google review

Amazing Force of nature with the quartz wall exposed above the surface.

John S — Google review

Great bathing experience! I preferred it over the other springs as it’s less busy and more natural. The springs take you around a narrow path to the end of the bathing area for you to jump out and walk to the start again. The current is quite strong and the water quite deep so do not go if you aren’t a capable swimmer. Gorgeous blue water and the water averages around 33 degrees.

Laura K — Google review

What a visional feast of natural beauty...the springs were gorgeous to swim in,warm and inviting.A pool noodle is a must( I didn't have one...but def. Would make the experience better) great place for kids,couples,families...don't miss out on this experience...defs a holiday highlight for me.

Michelle C — Google review

Beautiful place to visit. A must see and experience

Dee H — Google review

Nice place would like to go in the dry season as needs a good flush with water. There was alot of bat waste which made the area smell badly, not so keen to swim due to this.Would you believe it some lady thought it was a great idea to take her dog to the national park. So many disrespectful people in this world.

Jamtia — Google review

Bitter Spring thermal pool is very popular and has crystal clear warm water that is flowing so you can enter water and float or swim down river to the exit point.

Brian F — Google review

Gorgeous and a lovely place to swim which is safer than Bitter Springs as there is absolute clarity as to what is swimming in there.

Daniel M — Google review

This place is like heaven on earth! It is not as busy as Mataranka Hot Springs, the scenery is surreal and makes you feel so calm. The water is perfect temperature where you could stay here all day. Make sure you are sun smart as it’s pretty exposed. We loved how the current takes you down the stream and you can even bring a snorkel to explore and the best time to go is from 7 am then after 2 hours more people start coming in slowly. Bring a pool noodle and try to buy one at Kmart before you come for a visit (it’s cheaper!)“Jonique Life”Follow our journey around Australia on Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok and YouTube as we highlight wonderful experiences and magical places you can add to your ever growing bucket list.

RV park

Little Roper Stock Camp is a uniquely Australian RV park that distinguishes itself from a typical Caravan Park. The owners are incredibly friendly and the property offers a small but delightful array of animals for children to observe and even interact with. Each morning, the owners prepare delicious Johnny cakes, contributing to the warm and welcoming family-friendly atmosphere found nowhere else we've stayed at.

Great option for camping when in Mataranka. No bookings, so luck of the draw as to what is available when you get there which can be a challenge, but you can get there early and line up. Johnny Cakes available for $2 each morning (are excellent). Plenty of animals and a play area for the kids.

Danielle D — Google review

What an absolute gem!!! You get so much more than just a place to park your van for the night. Des is a great host. He serves up Johnny Cakes in the more with every imaginable condiment for $2 each....they were very good. Curry and stew nights, we were lucky enough to stay on Friday night to hear him tell a few stories around the yarn table. Don't forget to pre order a loaf of his own cooked bread for the next morning, it was fantastic and huge. Great for kids and we would definitely stay again.

Matt T — Google review

We loved it here. Easy drive to the local springs and town. Heaps for kids to do. Large camp fire morning and night to gather round. Johnny cakes for brekky are a must. Pizza nights and curry nights happen except Sundays/ Mondays. Can organise for fresh baked bread too. Brilliant hosts.

VG T — Google review

What a gem. Des was fantastic. Kids had a ball. Hay and rope swings, plenty of animals, reptiles to handle, curry night was yum, Johnny cakes for breaky (delicious), close to thermal springs, great local info provided by Des. Only 1 small gripe is that a rooster decided to wake up everyone at 430am, and we were right next to him. Maybe could be penned a bit further away, but I suppose that's expected at a farmstay kind of place, despite this we stayed 3 nights. Des was such a gracious host and obliged with everyones requests where he could with a smile on his face even though the place was extremely busy. Will definitely endeavour to return. Thanks again

Chris P — Google review

Well we enjoyed a couple of days at Little Roper Camp Stay in Mataranka.Something different & really enjoyable.Des & his crew do a fantastic job keeping the kids entertained with all the farm animals & many other reptiles like Snakes, Turtles, Lizards, etc..Home style cooking is on the menu, Buffalo curries & stews, early morning Johnny Cakes with Bushman’s Tea on the billy.Open fires. Simply awesome fun.

Dave M — Google review

Rhiannon B — Google review

We had an incredible time at Little Roper Stockcamp, a truly family-friendly and authentic bush camp. The animal feeding and holding experiences were delightful for the kids and adults alike. We absolutely loved the communal area, which brought campers together in a wonderful way. The bush amenities were spotless, and the family bathroom was perfect for our needs. The fresh bread and Jonny cakes were simply the best. This place is one of our, if not our absolute favorite, paid camps. Highly recommend.

Wazere 2 — Google review

What a beautiful welcoming place. Des and his Helper made sure we were all looked after.Great advice.Johnny cakes and billy tea are amazing!Reptiles and animals the kids loved

Melissa S — Google review

Great location but very tired facilities. One shower for the whole site. 'Kitchen' basically non existent - stocked up on a whole food shop before arriving only to find there's no fridge. There was no running water from any taps after 6pm, not sure why.

Faye R — Google review

Stayed there in August this year 2022. Great place! Loved the host Des (true bushy) and loved his Johnny cakes. We didn’t have kids with us but all the kids that were there looked like they were having a great time especially with the animals. We didn’t have the camp fire dinner only because we already had food we had to eat but it looked and smelt delicious. Would definitely go back.

Michael J — Google review

Absolutely loved this spot the kids didn't want to leave we were only going to stop for one night but stayed for 3 nights. Des the owner is such a character he showed and taught the kids about snakes and lizards aswell as his turtles. His famous for his Johnny cakes which he will cook up for you. It's about a 2 minute drive to the Mataranka thermal pools which was a great spot to float around in. The creek beside his property produced a couple of nice sized Barra which unfortunately l as always did not catch . I highly recommend this spot its very laid back and great place to listen to Des talk about certain stories from around the erea.

Glenn M — Google review

Thanks to Telka, Des and the kiddies,We had an awesome, peaceful and relaxing stay. Lucky to be in before the crazy sets in. Kids loved the whole set up...so much so they added on an additional night. Authentic farmstay. Great new family shower area. Camp brekkie made fresh everyday. Hope all goes well with the pizza nights too thanks for letting us be the testers 🙏Highly recommend staying here. Great location in Mataranka too. Good value and great hosts 🩷💜

We enjoyed a lovely night here. Great place for families and very relaxing. Thank you to the family who run it. Would rather support you guys than the big name parks. The springs just down the road too.

Guy D — Google review

Absolutely loved our 2 nights here! Very laid back, family friendly camp ground with lots of animals. At 9am, kids can hold snakes, rabbits, lizards, turtles & feed the buffalo, cows, chickens & pigs.Don't miss the 8am Jonny cakes either, absolutely delicious & a great way to meet other travelling families sitting around the long table eating breakfast together. No bookings at the moment, get in early & wait for reception to open at around 10. Usually a bit of a line up during high season, but you can jump out & the kids can play while you wait.Easy access to Mataranka homestead for the whip show & thermal pools, plus Bitter Springs is very close by as well.Highly recommend!!

Laura B — Google review

Highly recommend. This is one of the best camp site I’ve ever been to.Toilets are very good. Especially family shower room is great for washing kids. Very clean, hot shower, plenty of space. It is cleaned twice a day.We had the curry night. They offer a great variety of curries and breads and we were very satisfied. In the morning, there are animals programs that children like.Mataranka and Bitter Springs are very close. It was such a beautiful place.A cool little cowboy will welcome you😊

Stan Martin Park, situated in Mataranka, is home to a collection of life-sized sculptures depicting characters from the Never Never. These sculptures are spread throughout the park, offering visitors a unique and immersive experience. Additionally, nearby Elsey Cemetery on Elsey Cemetery Road provides an opportunity to delve into Australian history and is well worth a visit. The park also features a picnic area, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely day out surrounded by intriguing cultural elements and natural beauty.

My review is actually on the Elsey Cemetry, Wee of the Never Never.. The Cemetry is located out of town on Elsey Cemetry Road and well worth a visit. Unfortunately Google Maps doesn't have an option to upload photos so I'll put them here.

We did this hike during the day and it was quite exposed so make sure you are sun smart. You will walk through a Sandy path so make sure you have proper footwear. The walk was great as you are walking along side the river which is such a great colour, the falls at the end are small but gorgeous, you can stop here and have a lovely picnic.“Jonique Life”Follow our journey around Australia on Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok and YouTube as we highlight wonderful experiences and magical places you can add to your ever growing bucket list.

A 4.5 Kilometre walk, each way, over limestone and powdery sand will get you to the falls. Take water as there isn't any on the track.

Peter T — Google review

Good walk, all up about 9kms, a lot of sand on the tracks. Was hot and bit disappointing that you can't swim but cross rule.

Ray P — Google review

The was absolutely incredible to look at, super inviting although we were CROCSAFE 💁🏽‍♀️ we saw some wild bores drinking from small watering holes… the blue arrows directed us across some fallen trees and we didn’t feel it was right so we went back… never got to the falls but the walk 3ks in was nice enough!

Maneesha J — Google review

Was an interesting if long 8km return walk along the Roper River to the falls. Saw a couple of fresh water crocs as well.

Annette V — Google review

Long walk to waterfall. Hard to find the waterfall through the trees. Some parts very rough across rocks.

Angela Z — Google review

About 4 K one way and unfortunately it is an in out track. Although if you could somehow cross the tributary at the end it would be a loop... but unfortunately you can't. All of this area is not controlled for crocs and we saw one the last time. Track has a bit of sand. Lovely views of the Roper and if you keep your eyes peeled you will see bowers...as in bower bird mating nests. Very cool.

Gavin S — Google review

Beautiful hiking trails which are well marked with triangles and plenty of direction. I would give yourself plenty of time to make this hike though as there are many photographic moments along the way (we easily spent the majority of our day here) and you'll probably make lots of stops to observe the birds, the cotton bushes, flowers, gorgeous falls cascading. Make sure to bring lots of water, sunscreen and snacks as you will get hungry on your hike!

Tabitha P — Google review

After trekking 4 kilometres along a sometimes difficult track alot of it loose sand you come to what could only be described as small rapids. And overgrown at that i don't know how old the publicity photo is but its not recent. Then to find a car parked at the picnic area just topped off an afternoon of sheer disappointment. Don't waste your time.
